Among the most important criteria for health, longevity and disease prevention is complete and balanced nutrition. The National Research Council's "Nutrient Requirements of Dogs and Cats" identifies 40 nutrients that are essential for cats. These 40 nutrients must be provided at the right level and in the right balance to deliver complete and balanced nutrition to a cat. Nutrient deficiencies and imbalances can cause serious health problems, and even death in some cases.

Using formulation software, pet nutritionist Hilary Watson has created 101 complete and balanced home-made recipes for cats. These recipes use easily-sourced human food ingredients and are balanced with HILARY'S BLEND FOR CATS™ supplement for home-made meals. HILARY'S BLEND FOR CATS supplement contains taurine plus 13 essential vitamins, 11 essential minerals and chicory root extract, a prebiotic fibre for intestinal health. The inclusion of this supplement in all recipes ensures that all essential nutrients are present in the right level and in the correct balance for the optimal health of your cat. A complete nutrient profile, calorie content and feeding guides are provided for each recipe.

There are two reasons for including so many limited antigen recipes in this cookbook. First, many cats who are candidates for home-made meals for medical reasons will benefit from limited antigen recipes. Cats with food allergies or atopy, cats with gastroenteritis or inflammatory bowel disease, cats with idiopathic diarrhea, and cats with skin disease all benefit from being fed limited antigen recipes. Second, cats are notoriously finicky and their personal taste preferences are highly individualized. A recipe that contains 10 ingredients may be rejected by a cat because a single ingredient isn't to the cat's liking. It is difficult to formulate complex recipes that all cats will enjoy. By limiting recipes to only a few ingredients, it is easier for an owner to determine their own cat's personal preferences. For cats that don't require a specific limited antigen recipe for medical reasons, variety can be provided by feeding many different limited antigen recipes. This not only delivers a variety of phytonutrients from different fruits and vegetables, it also provides a change of flavours and textures which most cats will appreciate.

The recipes in this book combine the nutritious goodness of fresh human food ingredients with the scientific rigor or complete and balanced nutrition. Your cat can do no better!
